It benefits the audience because they know what to expect – ‘genre loyalty.’ They are often reflected in the characters, projecting the characters ego onto the audience, meaning they become more actively involved. The film-makers benefit from this because they receive genre loyalty, meaning the audience are likely to return and watch more.

Hybridization
This is when you cross the codes and conventions of two or more genres together, for example Action-Thriller, Romance-Comedy, Horror-Thriller etc. This is beneficial because it covers a wider audience and allows blending of codes and conventions together to add variety.
